Simple action you can take now
1. Go to http://www.house.gov/writerep/and write your Representative.
Tell him or her:
As your constituent, I want you to attend the Congressional Briefing on Codex. What: Congressional Briefing on Codex
When: 12 noon, September 20, 2005
Where: Room 2220 RayburnI am against CODEX and expect you to uphold my freedom of choice, not CODEX regulation.
Apparently these folks don't even attend half of these things, unless WE tell them to.
2. Publish this list of two simple actions on your website or blog. Get the word out.
More info on CODEX here: http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/

Relay for Life update
Chair massage at the Relay for Life event went really well. The vibe was great, the participants amiable, and the day ended up being a lot of fun.
I set up at the Survivor Tent and it didn't take long before someone was in the chair. After that it was pretty much an uninterrupted stream of folks receiving work. I met a couple from Sacramento (the area I grew up), got to give massage to some of the event volunteers, and met another massage therapist.
A photographer was there, named Mikhail Rezhepp. He's offered me the use of the pics he took of me — so fun to have a record of the event. As an aside, that hook I'm wearing is a Maori piece from New Zealand, sent to me by my friends Ramsey & Despina. Thanks you two!
This Saturday I'll either be at the Really Really Free Market or the Sacred Mountains Festival (scroll down for info). Haven't decided which yet.

Recipe - Roasted Veggies in Balsamic Tomato Sauce with Quinoa
I made something so good that I wanted to send the recipe to a friend... it was based on a recipe Des found for our menu last week. But I changed it sufficiently that if my friend is to have what we had, I need to rewrite it. And man, writing recipes is not easy!
I didn't keep track of how long I did things for, or how hot the oven was... I just did things. Well, he's a good enough cook to flow with it. Hopefully you are too, if you decide to try this. :-) So, here's the whole grain version:
Roasted Veggies in Balsamic Tomato Sauce with Quinoa
serves four
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1 zucchini
- 1 large sweet onion
- 1 c quinoa
- 1 c vegetable stock
- 1/2 c water
- 1 c green beans
- 3 heirloom tomatoes (about 1 pound) — these make it. Don't use lame tomatoes.
- 3-6 garlic cloves, to taste
- balsamic vinegar
Slice bell pepper into strips
Cut zucchini into rounds
Slice sweet onion into thick rounds, then cut each into eighths
Combine with olive oil, salt, and pepper in a pan and roast in the oven, stirring occasionally
Bring stock and water to a boil, stir in quinoa, turn heat to low and cover, simmer for 20 minutes or until liquid is absorbed.
Dice tomatoes, saving juice
Chop garlic
Heat some olive oil over medium heat, and then sautee tomatoes and garlic for a few minutes
Blanch green beans — dip into boiling water 3 minutes, then rinse with cold water
When vegetables are roasted, add to pot with tomatoes, including any juices/oil in the roasting pan. Add reserved tomato juice, green beans, and balsamic vinegar
After flavors have had a chance to mingle, serve over quinoa.

These people rock
So I just found Stahlbush frozen peas at Rainbow... when I saw them, I picked them up, quickly scanned the other packages long enough to verify that this was the only one packaged in !plastic, and bought them immediately.
Thank you, Stahlbush, for packaging your product in paper. Easy to compost or recycle, it keeps crap out of my black cart.

They are so gross
So Sara Lee is marketing white bread as whole grain, just because they put a few in the dough.
Of course, the ingredients give it away as just another broth of refined sweeteners (corn syrup), refined oils (and cottonseed oil? gross), and preservatives.
Hey, at least there's no hydrogenated oils. Thank someone for small favors, eh?
The processed "food" industries are turning the whole grain thing into a low-carb mania redux. No, worse. At least when they put "no carbs" on bottled water labels, they were telling the truth.
